Hello, My daughter is almost three and she was doing so well with the potty training....telling us all the time when she had to go. Then, with all the excitement and family over Christmas, she just stopped telling us. I still keep her in underwear...so she feels the wetness, but, she'll just take them off and keep playing. She doesn't even tell me when she's wet herself. It's like she's choosing to forget everything she just learned about going potty. I am really frustrated, cause it seems like there's no end in sight. What do I do? Any advice?

Amy, Thank you for your post. Your daughter might have been just fine if the excitement of Christmas had not occurred. But then there always seems to be something that disrupts our routine. I commend you for leaving her in her big girl underwear. That is an important decision you made. I realize it is more difficult (messy) for you, but it's better than starting all over with the training and maybe creating more problems. Moving forward, while reassuring your daughter that you love her, communicate to her that it is not acceptable for her to have accidents. Do not let her continue to play when she has an accident. Consider having her help with the clean-up and explain to her that she is not being permitted to return to her activity (playtime) because she was not willing to take a potty break to avoid an accident. She made a choice and her choice led to the consequence. Encourage her to make better choices (i.e. choose to take a potty break so she doesn't have to miss her playtime). See, children often do not understand that they need to take more breaks. They are more likely to think they just need to try harder not to pee. This only leads to urinary tract infections, constipation, and other more serious issues. Consider rewards such as a potty chart and stickers. We offer several free charts on our website. Good luck, and please let us know how things progress. Narmin |

My daughter was wearing big girl underwear for a couple months since turning two. She suddenly got a stomach virus that put her in the hospital with diarrhea every couple minutes. We had no choice but to put a diaper on her for this. Since she got better, she always wants her diaper on. She will pee on the potty when she wants to, but holds her bowel movement in and tells us to go away so she can go. I've tried to sit her on the potty when she is straining to hold it in but she screams and crys, etc. She is 2 1/2 now and i dont see getting rid of the diapers anytime soon! Any advice would be appreciated, I'm afraid she is becoming constipated because she won't go for days! |

Hi KBowen, In the Pocket Idiot's Guide: Potty Training Problems, Dr. Alison talks about a 3 step process that might work for her. step 1: have her, with her diaper on, poop in the bathroom. if she does, give her a reward (ie potty reward stickers) Dispose of the poop in the toilet and have her flush, wash her hands, etc as if she just pooped in the potty. Make sure this is a calming, safe environment for her, so shut the door if she needs it. step 2: within 1-2 weeks give her the choice, if she sits on the potty (even with the diaper on) and poops she gets to pick her reward. continue to praise her even if she just poops in the bathroom, not on the potty. Model the proper behavior in front of her, invite her in and talk with her as you are going #1 and #2. step 3: the diapers come off and she goes in the potty again! Keep the praise going and the positive attitude! |
