Thank you for your inquiry.

You are correct, the Pampers Feel and Learn diapers were not on the market at the time the book was originally written. However, I would consider the following if you choose to try them:

1. Be sure you are conducting dry pants inspections. If your child does not feel the wetness and continues to have accidents in the same diaper, then they are not helping and the expense may not be worth it.

2. Consider that your son may not realize the difference between one type of pampers and the next. One of the benefits of using "big kid" pants is the child can readily tell the difference between a diaper and the underwear.

3. Consider whether you are making the choice based on what will be easiest for your child (to grasp the concept) or your own need to control a mess. Stay with me here - - I, too, am a "neat freak".

However, kids are kids and an accident can be cured with a good washing. - - - Anyway, you may be surprised. The training pants[1] (not the regular character underwear) are very absorbent and will catch a good percentage of accidents. I'm not sure how much the feel and learn will catch either. The point is, if your child is "feeling" the accident, he will likely stop and tell you. If he continues to have the accident (or continues to have multiple accidents), then he may not be ready.

By the way, if you want additional protection when using the potty training pants listed above, try waterproof covers[1]. But remember, these options are not meant to replace diapers - - meaning they will not contain multiple accidents. That's why the dry pants inspections are so important.

So, I hope this information helps. I would love to hear back from you to know how it goes. Particularly if you use the Feel and Learn option.

Good luck!

Hi. I bought your potty Scotty kit in November 2006. my son is 34.5 mos. old & we have been asking him if he wants to use the potty for over 8 mos. now. most days, he says no, but just last week, he started saying yes & since then, he has made all his BM's in the potty. He won't urinate in the potty though. anyway, this signals to me that he is finally ready to be potty trained! So, I've just read your book & am wondering if I can use Pampers Feel and Learn pull up diapers instead of big boy underwear on the Big Day? the feel and learn allow the child to feel the wet sensation when they urinate. I know your book advises against pull ups, but I wasn't sure if the feel and learn product was on the market when your book was written since the copyright is 2006. my husband & I are neat freaks & are concerned about cleaning up accidents with the big boy underwear.

If you still advise against the feel n learn diapers, what product from your web site can you recommend instead of big boy underwear to contain the daytime accidents? I was confused by all the different potty training pants you offer. Thanks!

I think we've answered part of your question (about the feel and
learn), so I'll try to address the rest.

Sending your little guy off to preschool can be a big deal for him
when it comes to potty breaks. My almost 5-year-old son just went
through a BIG ordeal at his last preschool. My best advice is to be
sure you are in close communication with his teachers. Find out how
they handle potty breaks, accidents, etc. (including wiping). For
boys, it's not as comfortable a transition to deal with #2 at school.

Let the school know you are in the process of training. If they can
work with him, great! If not, just ask them to at least be sure to do
"dry pants inspections" and if he has an accident, change him
immediately so he doesn't get used to the wet feeling while you are
working so hard to "de-program" him of this.

Finally, regarding the practice runs, follow your gut. If you don't
think he's benefiting (if he's getting extremely upset to the point of
a physical battle), I'd recommend switching to a reward system. Focus
on the dry pants rather than the consequence for the accident. Try
something like a gold coin (cheap at the dollar store or party store
for a huge bag) when he goes to the potty). You can give him three or
five coins at the end of a day if he has no accidents. Then when he
accumulates 10, 20 or 50 (you decide), he gets to do something
special, like go to his favorite park, restaurant, or movie. You pick
the reward that you think will motivate him.

This type of reward is great because it is usually consistent with
what they use in preschool. Kids get a gold star, coin, or whatever,
for each day they behave. When they accumulate "X" amount, they get
to go to the treasure chest (a box of tiny toys).

So, give it a try. Good luck! And please, let me know how it progresses.

Sincerely,

Hi. well, we had our big day today & I'm confused as to what to do. He
went #1 twice today & #2 once today. then he had an accident (#1) & we
started doing the practice runs. After 2 practice runs, he started getting
very upset about having to do 8 more. So, I started telling him it was a
countdown & we only had 6 more, etc. well, then he started to think it was
fun. By practice run #7, he went #2 on the potty so we stopped the practice
runs. However, what should I do tomorrow if he has an accident? I'm still
trying to figure out if he feels these are punishment or not?

Also, what do you recommend I put on my son if he is in preschool? He will
be going to school this thur. for 3 hours. do I put him in Pull ups or big
boy underwear? I just don't know if he'll feel comfortable using the potty
there or if he'll tell the teacher he has to go to the potty. Thanks! so
far so good!
