Hi Lakeila,

Thank you for your questions. I'm going to assume your son is doing well with potty training and is wearing big boy underwear during the day, is that correct?

If nighttime is your only concern you're nine-tenths of the way there. Congratulations! From here on out it's up to your son's physiological development. In other words, nighttime training is not a learned skill but rather a matter of your son's physical development.

Most physicians do not consider bedwetting an issue until after the age of five or six. Again I'll make an assumption - - that your son is less than age 5 - - probably only recently potty trained. So, you'll want to brush up on some basic nighttime training facts. You may also want to stock up on mattress protection.

As far as diapers or training pants go, it really depends on your son's progress and your tolerance for cleaning up. If your son is waking up most mornings dry, I would definitely transition him to regular underwear, using the mattress protection as a back-up. However, if your son is having frequent overnight accidents I would not hesitate to put him in overnight underwear, cloth training pants (there are many options), or even pull-ups to reduce stress on everyone involved. But be sure to explain to your son that the special pants are for overnight only.

If your son is approaching five years of age you may want to know more. There are several treatment options and products available. I would also recommend discussing your concerns with your son's pediatrician.

Remember, accidents are involuntary and can be as upsetting for your son as it is for you. So take a deep breath and take heart that it won't last forever!

Best of luck to you. Please keep us informed of your son's progress.

Narmin
