My daughter is 4 1/2, and she has some physical and mental delays. She was tested as being about 35 months old academically. She is getting too big for pullups..I go through about 10-15 a day! I try to put panties on her, and she screams, and pulls them off. She also refuses to walk around undressed, or even just in panties and a tshirt or dress.Any advice on training a child with disabilities? |

Kat, I do not have first hand experience with potty training children with disabilities as I do with typical children. So I will offer you information and suggestions based on my research and knowledge of potty training in general. Potty Training in One Day is a very specific and structured method for potty training. It was developed in the 1970's by Azrin and Foxx - two pschologists who were studying what is involved in learning and how learning can be made more rapid. This article will on their book - Toilet Training in Less than a Day - will provide you with more information. So, based on this, I would suggest that try the Potty Training in One Day technique. It will probably take you a few more days and a lot more persistance than the parent of a typical child. You have to decide if this is the route you want to take. Also, some other thoughts.... What other methods or techniques have you tried? Have you tried reward charts? What does your family physician / therapist recommend? Other Moms - out there - do you have any help and or suggestions for Kat? We would love to hear from you. Narmin |
