I have 3 year old twin boys. One is going on the potty but wears diapers for nap and bedtime and the other refuses to go potty anywhere other than his diaper. I put training underwear on him and he will have the urge to go and say he has to go but when he tries to he can't go. He will hold it until I put a diaper on him for nap and then let it all out. What do I do?

Hi Tammy,

Sounds like your troublesome twin may be suffering from a bit of performance anxiety. At this point it might be best to take a break for a month or two. During the break review your strategy. Think about what you can do to make the process a little more relaxed and a little more fun for your son. Customize a program just for him. Each child is different and will respond differently to various methods and rewards. Consider modifying your approach. There are five basic potty training methods but you can modify any of them to suit the needs of your child.

Consider his potty environment. Do you think he is comfortable? Are you training him to sit or stand? Is he using a potty seat or a potty chair and which would be better for him?

Also consider the reward system you have selected. Maybe he needs a little extra incentive? Consider his unique personality and what makes him tick. You can use his favorite activity, restaurant, toy, etc., as a reward that he can earn for using (or even attempting) to use the potty. Charts and stickers are great to encourage a child to at least try. And many boys respond well to the different styles of toilet targets. Sometimes it's just a matter of finding the right reward.

And finally, when you are ready to return to training, consider getting rid of the diapers/pull-ups altogehter (for both boys). It's confusing to a child to go back and forth, even at naptime and bedtime. Instead, try overnight underwear, waterproof cloth training pants, or even plastic/vinyl training pants.

I'm sure this isn't the first time, nor will it be the last time that your twins will "compete" with each other for their own identity. I wish you the best of luck in resolving this dilemma. Keep your chin up and before you know it you'll have this challenge beat and you will be on to the next one.

Thank you for your post, and please, let me know how it works out.

Narmin
