To: Mom of 2.9 month old

Thank you for your post. I have a few thoughts that hopefully will help.

First, does your son sit or stand to pee? If he learns to sit when he pees it will be easier to train him to use the potty when he has to poop.

Try making the whole process fun. Implement a reward system. Figure out what really motivates your son and explain that will be his reward when he initiates going potty on his own. Limit his access to the item except when he earns it.

Does your son use a potty chair or potty seat? He may not be comfortable. Different designs offer different features that can improve comfort, stability, and hence a feeling of security. Consider trying another type of seat/chair.

He might also be a little fearful of the whole process. Watch for signs of this and realize that a toddler's fear of the potty is not rational. As a parent the best thing you can do is reassure your son that you are right by his side and will protect him.

And finally, consider that although your son did well when your daughter initially came home, he's now consumed with potty training. This can be an overwhelming time for him - - a time that usually demands lots of attention and time from Mom and Dad. From a child's perspective we are suddenly expecting a lot. It might just be that the extra little person in your household will make things a bit more challenging. Read the potty training readiness signals and take into consideration the recent changes in your household. It may just take a while longer. Hang in there!
