Hello,

My son caught the West Nile Virus three years ago. Up until that point he was considered to be functioning as a normal child. After his illness, which he is now 6 years old, and he functions at a two and half year old mentally. He tell you when he is wet and when he has pooped that he stinks. He will even go get pampers and wipes. He just doesn't get the concept of the toilet and what it is used for. How can I train him. He is alomost seven years old. Please help me!!!

Hello Latrina,

Thank you for your post. I am sorry to hear about your son's illness. It obviously changes your expectations and I congratulate you on your efforts to adjust. But in spite of your hard work it seems your son is not connecting the dots, I can imagine your frustration.

Have you discussed this issue with your son's pediatrician? It may be that due to the illness your son is not able to feel the fullness of his bladder and/or bowels. So rather than it being an intellectual issue it may be more of a physical/sensation issue. This is definitely a question for the doctors.

If your son is functioning at a 2 1/2 year old, he may not be quite ready. Please refer to our potty training readiness guide for details. It may be that you have to wait a little longer for him to progess. What is your son's prognosis? Have you checked with mental health resources? They may have some additional ideas for you.

I encourage you to continue your efforts and stay positive. Be glad your son is at least communicating with you and showing an effort to help with the clean-up. He is obviously concerned and wants to help. Some kids would just keep on playing, showing little or no interest or effort.

I wish you the best of luck.

Narmin
