My son, 25 months old has been successfully going to the potty for a week & 1/2, pee pee & poo poo sitting on his portable potty. He just started going pee pee standing up on the big toilet for a day & 1/2. Today he told me he had to go pee pee when in fact he had to go poo poo so he did poo poo standing up, his first accident. I cleaned him up & explained to him he needs to continue to sit down when he has to go poo poo, only pee pee can he stand up for. Then next time he went pee pee today he just sat down on his little potty. Is this a set back? should i be concerned?? I was really thrilled with him standing now because he is afraid of public toilets.

To: Parents of confused 25 month old (standing to pee and poo?)

Thank you for your post, and please accept my apology for the slow response. The holidays have kept us all very busy.

It sounds like your son is a clever little guy but confused about when he should stand and when he should sit. This is by no means a set back. It is difficult for such a little guy to distinguish between the two bodily functions at this point. There are definite benefits to keeping it simple - potty training by having your son sit on the potty.

As for public toilets, try out a portable solution. There are several options from which to choose.

Please let us know how your son is doing. And good luck!

Narmin
