My 3 year old will consistently go poop and pee in the potty at daycare, but at home will not acknowledge his need to poop and runs into the other room to do it in his pants instead of the potty. Charts, stickers, rewards, positive reinforcement, etc. have all been tried. Potty training started (his choice) *after* his baby brother arrived 8 months ago, so I assume we can't blame it on that. Any thoughts? Thanks. |

To: Mother of trained (at daycare) 3 year old son Sorry about the delayed response. The holidays were busier than expected. Thank you for your post. It's great your son is at least partly trained. As for home, I'd have to disagree with you on the baby brother thing. If your son is willing to use the potty at school, but not at home, you have to ask yourself what is the difference? At school he's around his peers. At home he's around his baby brother who is requiring attention from his mommy. Or maybe there is some other difference - - their approach, the potty environment (chair, seat, big potty, etc.). So, how do you address the problem? I'd suggest emphasizing the "big boy" benefits as much as possible to encourage him to want to be a big boy at home, just like at school. Reassure him that attention will be given to him even if he's not requiring a diaper change. And speaking of diapers (or pull-ups), get rid of them if you are using them. They only send a mixed message. Character "big boy" underwear are a great incentive. As for the potty environment (possibly the other difference from school to home), are you using a potty chair or a potty seat? What does the school use? How about a step stool? Make sure you are well equipped to provide a comfortable potty experience for him. And finally, have you tried potty targets? There are several from which to choose listed on our rewards page. I hope these ideas help. Please let me know how it goes. And good luck! Narmin |
