I know we do the 9 practice runs if my daughter has an acident on the Big Day. I assume that also continues for the next two days afterwards. How long do I keep this consequence up if she has accidents? |

Practice Runs and Potty Training in One Day - - Do I keep up the practice runs on day two, three, and so on? This question (and variations of it) seems to come up a lot. The practice runs reinforce the concept, teaching your child just what to do, but they also serve as a consequence. As long as the environment remains calm (no hysterics, no tantrums, etc.), it is best to continue the practice runs each time your child has an accident. Don't be afraid to be firm. Your child isn't going to like it, but hang in there. Practice, practice, practice. You will soon celebrate your child's potty training accomplishments. However if you are dealing with a significantly upset or fearful child, it is best to deal with the negative behavior before continuing the training. Take a break to let everyone calm down. Then identify just what is causing your child to resist potty training. Is he afraid of using the potty? Is he testing you? Is he really ready? As long as he is ready, explore ways to encourage your child to use the potty. There are some great reward ideas on our website. Just remember to keep the atmosphere light and fun! Good luck, Narmin |
