My daughter had her big day about a week ago. She's been doing great with peeing in the potty. We're having problems with poop, thou. She went poop in the potty the first 2 days. But ever since then, she's been holding back. I can tell she needs to go, and she will go to the potty several times and sit for a while and not do anything. And then, right afterwards, she'll poop in her undies and THEN say she needs to go to the potty. I ask her where poop and pee-pee go, and she says "in the potty. not in my panties." But she's done it 4 days in a row now, and it's always been outside of the house. She uses a potty chair at home. What am I supposed to do/say when this happens?

Hi Joann,

First, how old is your daughter? To be sure she is ready you might want to read a list of readiness signals.

Next, review your potty training method to be sure it is the best choice for your child.

Remember to be calm, never discipline (spank, punish, etc) for an accident. Encourage and reward for desired behavior and apply consequences for undesired behavior.

Although it is not unusual for a child under the age of 4 to experience lack of bowel movement control, it is best to check your pediatrician. Your daughter could be experiencing a medical problem such as constipation or encopresis.

And last but not least, you may want to read a couple more articles, one on potty training resistance and one on irrational fears.

Good luck with your potty training journey. I hope you find the information provided helpful. Thank you for taking the time to post your question, and please let us know how it goes.

I had the exact same problem. First, add fiber to you child's diet, we use Benefiber in addition to fruits and vegetables. Second, don't get too stressed about this phase, they will eventually get poop in the potty. (We did it with a newborn in the house) Third, you MUST find the reward that really matters to your child. We don't watch TV at our house, so getting to watch a Thomas the Train video is a BIG deal, that's what finally worked to get our son to poop in the potty. Anything your kid already gets to do everyday, isn't a big enough reward, so figure out what will motivate them.
