We just had our big day two days ago. My daughter is doing great with going pee in the potty, but having a hard time with poop. I'm afraid she's going to get constipated. She did poop in the potty yesterday morning, but hasn't since, and she's eaten alot. She keeps saying she needs to go potty, and sits for a while (or just a second) then says she's done without doing anything. They she said her tummy hurts and wanted a band-aid on it. I read the info on the site. How long should I wait to confirm that she's constipated and needs to go back to a diaper or oils? |

Congratulations on your successful big day! Don't be discouraged by the bowel movement issue. It is not unusual for a child to take things one step at a time in the potty training process. First, let me say it is always best to check with your pediatrician to be sure you aren't missing a medical concern. Having said that, I would re-visit some simple points to be sure you aren't missing a common solution. I would encourage your daughter to drink as much water as possible and increase fruit and fiber in her diet. I would also take a second look at her environment. Is she using a potty seat or chair? Making sure she can sit comfortably without fear of falling might be a concern. If she's using the big potty, are you using a step stool or ladder to allow for a comfortable sitting position? If your daughter's legs are dangling she may not be able to push as she needs. Is she relaxed? Maybe reading her a story while sitting on the potty might help. If the situation seems to be more complex, it may help to read our articles regarding constipation and encopresis. Going back to a diaper isn't necessarily going to resolve a constipation issue if in fact that is what is happening. You may risk reversing the progress she has made to date. However if the resistance to bowel movements continue, and no other factors such as medical are involved, it might be worth the trade-off for a few months. Good luck, and please let me know how she does. Narmin |

Well, she eventually went poop in the potty that day. She's gone once on day 2 and on day 3. But, the next two days she pooped during naptime. And, then yesterday, she didn't poop all day and hasn't yet today. She's on her potty chair and seems confortable. Taps her foot a lot. We read lots of books and sometimes sits for 15 mins without going poop. She continues to do great with peeing. I haven't given her much juice or water. She primarily drinks milk. I'll give her more juice. Hopefully she will go soon! Joann |

Joann, You're doing great and so is your daughter. Sounds like she is just a little inconsistent with her timing. She will likely continue to progress. Thank you for taking the time to update us and share your experiences. Please let us know things go. Narmin |
