First child = many mistakes and trials/errors. I had never heard to teach boys to sit down to potty. Now I wished I had. My son LOVES to go pee pee standing up, but REFUSES to sit down to go stinky. That's my first problem. My second problem is that he now wants to go pee pee in public bathrooms, but isn't tall enough to reach the toliet. So he pees all over the floor. I tried getting him to stand on the seat, but he won't. Is there a portable stool you can buy? Ahhh, help!

Hello new parent! Thank you for your post.

I'm not aware of any portable stools but what a great idea! We'll have to keep an eye out for a solution to that one.

There is one product that might be an option. It's called the Travel John Jr. It is a convenient, sanitary, discrete and compact solution for when a child has to go potty. You can carry one in your purse and toss it after use.

As far as training your child to go poop on the potty, well you are not alone. It is a common challenge. If your child is suffering from bowel movement resistance, it could be due to one of several problems.

Be sure he hasn't fallen into a cycle of discomfort, dread and delay, (or the D3 Cycle as Dr. Greene refers to it).

And be sure he has a comfortable environment.

Finally, be sure you give him time. Not only time as it refers to age, but time as it refers to our daily tasks. Our lifestyle these days is one of hurry, hurry, hurry. Until he get's the process down, give him permission to not be rushed.

Good luck, and take heart. He will catch on soon.

Thanks again for your post and please give us an update when you can.

Michaelyn
