MY DAUGHTER IS 2 YEARS AND 3 MONTHS. SHE HAS BEEN INTERESTED IN THE POTTY FOR A LONG TIME, BUT JUST RECENTLY STARTED USING IT REGULARLY. I DON'T WANT TO PUSH THIS ISSUE AT HER AGE, SO I HAVE BEEN LETTING HER DO IT AT HER OWN PACE. SHE HAS HAD NO BOWEL MOVEMENTS IN HER DIAPER FOR OVER A WEEK. ALL HAVE BEEN ON THE POTTY. SHE LETS ME KNOW WHEN SHE HAS TO HAVE A BM BUT NOT WHEN SHE HAS TO TINKLE. SHE HAS TINKLED A FEW TIMES, BUT ONLY WHEN SHE IS ALREADY ON THE POTTY FOR A BM. USUALLY THE PROBLEM IS THE OPPOSITE. AGAIN I'M NOT IN A HURRY AT THIS POINT, BUT WHAT IS A GOOD WAY TO ENCOURAGE HER TO TELL ME WHEN SHE HAS TO TINKLE TOO? ALSO, HOW DO YOU EXTEND POTTY TRAINING TO BEDTIME? ONCE SHE IS TRAINED, I DO NOT WANT HER TO WEAR A DIAPER OR PULL UP AT NIGHT. MY NEPHEW IS FIVE AND STILL WEARS AND WETS A PULL UP AT NIGHT. TO ME THAT IS NOT FULLY POTTY TRAINED. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. |

Hi Melissa, Thank you for your post. I'll try to answer all your questions. Your daughter is doing great! She is showing some of the signs of readiness but not all. The section on physiological development will be of particular interest to you. I suspect your daughter is just not quite ready to control her bladder. Or it may be that she just hasn't connected the dots yet - - identifying the feeling of a full or near-full bladder to the need to use the potty. You might want to give her a little more time. As for potty training at night, once you know she can use the potty on her own during the day, I would agree with you about not using diapers at night. To protect your bedding I suggest using thick, padded underwear (maybe even overnight underwear), and a good mattress pad/cover. And finally, regarding your nephew and bedwetting, keep in mind bedwetting is totally different than daytime accidents. There are many complex reasons for bedwetting, many of them having nothing to do with being thoroughly trained. So, ease up on the little guy, and tell his mom not to blame herself. Thank you for your post. And please keep in touch. Michaelyn |
