My son is 4 years and 3 months, and still has daily urine accidents. We didn't formally train him until he was 3 and 3 months, after his baby sister was born (we were afraid to do it before, lest he regress; plus he wasn't showing signs of readiness before - he's very smart, but slow to develop physically). The first few months of training were horrible and frustrating, and we probably broke every rule in the good-parenting handbook, and it had become a terrible power struggle. So after a few months, we apologized to him and handed the reins over to him and told him we wouldn't push him anymore, that he knew how to use the potty (he had the mechanics down, no problem, he just resisted doing it), and that it was now up to him. That made life much more peaceful in our house, but didn't help much with the actual toilet training. Fast forward almost a year, he has almost no BM accidents, but daily urine accidents, sometimes several times a day. He'll pee enough to wet through his pants, then run to the bathroom, finish in the toilet, then go and change himself into new underwear and pants, and resume what he was doing. I guess this is good in that he's taken responsibility for his toileting, but I can't understand why, a year later, he's still not getting it. The only time he actually goes to he bathroom and pees without an accident (and without prompting from us) is about 5-15 minutes before he has a BM - it's like that's the only time he can actually feel the pressure on his bladder. I don't know if this is an issue of laziness, of not wanting to disrupt his activity, or a physical issue where he really doesn't feel it. Is this at all normal for late-blooming boys? Do you think it's behavioral or physical? Should I consult a doctor? Thanks for your advice! |
