This is also posted under the ask other mommies, Id like advice and personal experiences also...

my son is 3 years old (turned 3 at the end of March). About a month or two before his birthday, I decided it was time to potty train. I waited till the weekend that I knew I would be home the whole time and pretty much threw diapers out the door - cold turkey.

I put him in undies and noted when he drank and pee'd. There were many accidents, but I figured there would be. I decided that if he didnt take to it, whole heartedly, within that weekend, that I would ditch the idea, and wait for more signs that he was ready.

About 2 weeks later, I woke up to him yelling for me to wipe his butt, he was on the potty. So.. IT WAS TIME.

Diapers... GONE. (completely this time)!! At first, it was a little rough, but not too bad, its new so i knew it would take time to get him to adjust. And then it was perfect. Going to town, no diapers. Sleeping through nap time and bedtime, no accidents. and even pooping (more so than not), which got even better to NO ACCIDENTS FOR LIKE A MONTH!!!

now.. here i am, cleaning his poop out of his pants, every day, EVERY TIME HE POOPS!! I believe its his choice. Hes either watching dora (lol) or playing outside, or with his friend <--- most of the time, so I understand why he would have accidents (doesnt want to take a pause from fun). BUT.. hes even doing it when hes not doing anything (really). Like he knows i get upset about it, and does it for that sole reason(yes, my toddler is THAT smart... no, i dont like it, lol).

A friend suggested that instead of me cleaning him up (which maybe he thinks would take less time away from his fun, than going to poop on the potty), that I should put him in the bath, with his dirty undies, a wash rag soaked in suds and the water on (tub not plugged), and make him clean himself (with me advising of course). I did this today... and he seemed a little confused, but at the same time didnt hate or enjoy it... so im not sure if this is going to work or not.... :.0

Dear Mom,

I know this can be a frustrating time in the potty training process. A lot of the same answers can be found at Advice and Tips. Now the first thing I would ask is have you asked him why he is pooping in his pants. If he tells you because he didn't want to stop playing then the next step is to always make him clean himself. Most children who resist going in the potty are simply afraid in the book Potty Training in one Day it goes into detail about how to handle bowel movement regression. Please also read our article on Potty Training Regression.
