It is a constant struggle to get our 3 year, 9 month old son to even sit on the potty with pants down and he has yet to make a deposit. Having tried everything else I can possibly think of or find on this site, I decided last week to drop the diaper and Pull-ups altogether, hoping the discomfort of wet underwear and clothes would motivate him. He is now withholding both urine and bowel to the point that he complains that his penis and bottom hurt until he eventually lets it all go in his pants. Although he can be stubborn, his primary motivation seems to be a fear that it will hurt coming out on the potty (although no issues coming out in pants, no constipation). He is otherwise fairly compliant. It has become pervasively stressful for the whole family. If we try to take him to the potty to stand or sit (on potty seat, potty chair or big toilet), it is usually met with screaming and physical struggle which can go on for 45 minutes or more. We've tried to give it a break, but he continues to complain of his penis and bottom hurting when he needs to go. How do we address his complaints if he refuses to sit on a potty?? (We've seen the pediatrician; there does not seem to be any medical reason for the pain other than retention.) |
