Hi, I am desperately seeking advice.... Here is a brief outline. We started sometime ago, waiting for the signs and although he wasn't showing too much interest and not showing all the signs I still decided to progress slowly. We talked and talked about being a big boy and wearing underpants just as his friends do. He seemed okay with this so we bought a potty, training pants, and off we went. I started with a routine of 4-6 times a day, encouraging him with prizes through a Thomas reward chart/star system (wrapped up some trains from Thomas Tank). If he sat on the potty he got a star, for a wee he got 2 stars and 3 for a poop. The first problem we encountered is he thought the potty was uncomfortable..hurts he said. So we bought a deluxe one which he now likes. The second problem we have is he is not interested in wearing big boy underwear, we have bought ones with all his fav characters, but no, he wants to wear a nappy and asks for a nappy on to wee or poop. At first he would only sit on the potty, clothed, but I thought this was a good start. The first day he was so eager to get the prize, he would sit on the potty naked, happily waiting for the wee to come. When it wouldn't come he would get upset and ask to put his nappy back on. After a few more trys he still couldn't wee on it and again got upset. So I would still give him a star for encouragement and by the 7th star he got a prize. He was so excited!! The next day, again I would encourage him, but not push to sit on the potty and he would get another star....seven stars on his chart would mean he would get another prize. Now it seems he wont try..and the prize wont encourage him enough. If I let him run around without a nappy he is okay with this, but if he wants a wee he pleads with me to put a pull-up nappy on. Given he is 3 now and I was told a good age to start with him, I am not sure where to go from here. Whether to leave it for a week or keep trying the way I am? Maybe he is a late starter with this? The main problem is I want him to be trained before feb when kindy starts. I need a new strategy. I was thinking of trying a prize box reward (like a lucky dip) for each time he wees or poops without a nappy on the potty...though I don't think even that will encourage him enough! Anyone have any ideas?? |
